Wednesday, June 9, the senior class graduated.

Starting at 4 p.m., CCBC Essex was full of music and cheer. As the SPHS ensemble played “Trumpet Tune” and “Pomp and Circumstance,” the faculty, staff and students began to process to the stage and to their seats.

Principal Robert SantaCroce introduced the two people attending from the board of education. After them, he introduced The Eastside Dream Team.. Following, he introduced the senior class president, Kristen Needer; the salutatorian, Christopher Martini; the vice president, Eric Mastroianni; the secretary, Julie Behner; the historian, Chayla Henry; the publicist, Lauretta Gutermuth; and last but surely not least, the treasurer and valedictorian, Christopher Mahone.

Principal Santacroce made a great speech about his appreciation for the graduating students and their many accomplishments. He was most excited to announce that SPHS set a record for scholarships received with a heaping 2.8 million dollars.

Through very heartfelt words, class President Kristin Needer, Treasurer and Valedictorian Christopher Mahone and Salutatorian Christopher Martini spoke about their appreciation for the teachers, staff and fellow classmates. Their speeches shook everyone and put tears in the eyes of teachers, parents and ensemble members.

Before being called to process for their certificates, the senior ensemble performers exited the bleachers and joined their fellow ensemble members to play their class song, a Glee-inspired version of “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, arranged by Kennis Rolle. Led by Director Kennis Rolle, the ensemble performed for the last time together.

Vice-Principals Jane Wetzel and Samuel Wynkoop called the names of the 178 graduating seniors. After all the seniors had been called and returned to the bleachers, a wave of mortarboards flew through the air.

Before the graduates could process out of the arena, the ensemble played the Alma Mater while the graduates sang and parents followed along in their programs. As the newly graduated seniors processed put of the arena, the ensemble performed “Trumpet Voluntary” to close the ceremony and congratulate the graduates.
